1996 — 2026
Thirty years of chaotic time series analysis.
Explore the structure of time series. Visualize it. Make predictions.
ChaosTimes marks 30 years since its development.
In 2026, we brought the original analysis system back to life on macOS.
The original interface. Running today.
The interface and workflow retain their original design. We updated the anr numerical library, the xbgi graphics library and ChaosTimes together so that the system can be built on macOS with OpenMotif.
This update makes the existing analysis tools usable again while preserving the original GUI.
make -f mf
make -f mf runRun these commands in the top-level directory after extracting the archive.
Build with make, then launch with the icon search path configured.
Build environment
The default OpenMotif prefix is /opt/homebrew. X11 headers and libraries, and a running X11 server, are required. Set MOTIF_PREFIX / X11_PREFIX to match your installation.
From generation to analysis and prediction.
The following functions were tested on a physical Mac.
- Ikeda mapGenerate chaotic time series
- EmbeddingReconstruct state space from a time series
- Dimension estimationInvestigate attractor structure
- Lyapunov spectrum estimationInvestigate divergence and contraction of trajectories
- Recurrence plotsVisualize recurrences of states
- Radial basis function network predictionNonlinear modeling with RBF networks
- Stationarity testing with KM2O–Langevin equationsTest time series stationarity
These checks cover operation, including launching tools, performing calculations and displaying results. They do not constitute numerical validation of every function under all conditions.
Marking the 30th anniversary.
ChaosTimes was developed to analyze experimental and measured time series from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics and chaos.
The title plaque has been reconstructed with POV-Ray for the 30th anniversary, based on the original image. Alongside the original website, we record the current status here. Thirty years on, ChaosTimes remains a tool for finding structure in data.
